Broomriggs House

 

Broomriggs is a country house which is situated on the eastern slopes overlooking Esthwaite Water and has commanding views of the area. It was built as a holiday home by the Thornely family in 1900 and was originally set in 113 acres of land. This included two thirds of Moss Eccles Tarn - the other third was part of Castle Farm which was owned by Beatrix Potter.  The Thornely family eventually sold the estate in 1913.

Since then Broomriggs was owned by two other families before being sold to a property development company in 1973 for just under £100,000.  At about this time much of the land was sold and the estate now covers 37 acres.  It was converted into luxury flats and holiday apartments and is now jointly owned by all the owners.

Broomriggs - One Of The Hidden Paths

 

The gardens at Broomriggs surrounding the house are delightful in themselves and much pleasure can be had by exploring the many hidden paths.  Broomriggs has it's own private frontage to Esthwaite Water and rowing boats are available for use.  The villages of Hawkshead and Near Sawrey are close by.  The lower fells of Claife Heights, which were much loved by Beatrix Potter, back on to it's south eastern edge.

All of this makes a stay at Broomriggs a really memorable experience and a place you will want to return to again and again.
